In this week's Alumni Spotlight, we catch up with alumnus Jekap Omod.
What are you doing now?
I studied neuroscience and am currently working as a laboratory scientist at Mayo Clinic.
How did APS prepare you for this role?
APS prepared me to always shoot for the stars, challenge myself, and never underestimate my capabilities. APS helped me develop my love for science and healthcare. In addition to loving science, APS also prepared me to value the importance of giving back to the community. In 2022, I translated over 70 Anuak bilingual children books and wrote the very first bilingual children book based on the Anuak folktales. By the end of 2022, I was able to send 15,000 books to Gambella, Ethiopia and distributed them to 60 primary schools. This is the first time for the Anuak children to get access to children books. I am currently raising more money to send 5,000 additional books this year to reach more schools.
I am grateful for all the support I received from my teachers at APS during my high school years as a new kid from Africa with a very little English. I am here today because of the support they gave me. I can’t mention all your names, but THANK you!
What is your advice for current Packers?
My advice for you is to listen to your teachers, show them respect, and always be ready to learn new information from them. There is nothing more valuable than the knowledge you receive from your teachers. I also encourage you to work hard and never underestimate yourself.
